Guide to Self-Leveling Over Solid Timber Floors

Is It Possible to Use Self-Leveling Compound on Solid Timber Floors?

Applying self-leveling compounds over a solid timber ground floor can be achieved successfully, provided certain conditions are met and the appropriate products are selected. When using the correct self-levelling compound, there is typically no need for priming the timber sub-floor. The key requirements are ensuring the surface is thoroughly clean and completely dry before pouring the self-levelling mixture.

In most cases, it is advisable to remove as much of the existing flooring as possible prior to application, especially over large areas. However, if removal is impractical due to the size or the flooring’s firm adhesion, it may still be feasible to proceed with certain self-levelling products.

Suitable Types of Wooden Floors for Self-Leveling Applications

Direct self-leveling over wooden timber floors is generally limited to specific types, such as solid parquet flooring, which presents favorable conditions. The picture above exemplifies such a surface, which often allows for successful application without extensive preparation.

For these floors, a latex-based self-levelling compound is recommended, as it is not mixed with water and thus does not alter the moisture content of the wood beneath. This compatibility is crucial for maintaining the integrity and stability of the wooden sub-floor.

Advantages of Self-Leveling Over Solid Timber Floors

  • No Gaps or Seepage Issues: Solid parquet flooring typically consists of tightly fitted planks, minimizing the risk of the self-levelling compound seeping into gaps.
  • Stable Ground Floor: Such flooring is usually installed on ground floors, which are less prone to movement, providing a stable base for the self-leveling layer.

Recommended Products

One reliable product I have used successfully is Arditex NA, a two-part latex-based self-levelling cement. It is suitable for various substrates, including upper floors, and offers excellent adhesion and flexibility.

Considerations and Recommendations

While it is technically possible to self-level directly over a solid timber floor, I strongly recommend removing the existing flooring if feasible. If removal is too challenging or resource-intensive, using a product like Arditex NA with the latex component is a sound choice. It is essential to select the version that includes a tub of latex additive, rather than one that is mixed solely with water.

Using a latex-based compound ensures the layer remains slightly flexible, accommodating minor movements in the floor joists, especially on upper levels. This flexibility helps prevent cracking or delamination over time, maintaining a smooth, level surface for your subsequent flooring installation.
